The Pre-Raphaelite movement was founded in 1848 as a brotherhood of seven English artists. Disenchanted with the tendency of their peers to exaggerate and over-stylise their subject matter, this group sought to return to an approach focused on detail, genuine ideas and a faithful reflection of natural forms. They cited Italian artist Raphael as the first influential figure to deviate from these aims, and thus began to refer to themselves as the “Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood”.
Although the Brotherhood itself was short-lived, their legacy was rich, and many of today’s most popular Pre-Raphaelite prints were originally painted many years after the group’s dissolution. With their focus on natural, classical beauty and accurate representation of colour and form, these works are intense and deeply moving – the perfect choice to enrich your home.
Our collection of Pre-Raphaelite posters offers a variety of elegant, tasteful pieces that are the perfect addition to any true art lover’s home. Works such as Sir John Everett Millais’ “Ophelia” and William Holman Hunt’s “The Light of the World” are timeless classics that perfectly showcase the original Brotherhood’s artistic intentions. Rich in colour and natural detail, these pieces are perfect for moments of quiet contemplation in the study or hallway. Fans of later Pre-Raphaelite paintings will also enjoy the works of Edward Robert Hughes, whose fantastical yet highly detailed scenes are thought to have been a great influence on the young J. R. R. Tolkien. And with one look at the beautiful colours of “Twilight Fantasies” and “Night with her Train of Stars”, it is easy to see why.
Although not a member of the original Brotherhood, perhaps one of the most enduring Pre-Raphaelites is John William Waterhouse. Often focusing on the female form and scenes from classical lore, his work is incredibly popular due to its faithful depiction of familiar themes. Masterpieces such as “Cleopatra”, “The Soul of the Rose” and “Miranda – the Tempest” are the perfect Pre-Raphaelite prints around which to design your sophisticated living room.
