Einar Wegener

Pioneering Danish painter

Einar Wegener is better known as Lili Elbe. The Danish transgender artist transitioned from male to female to become Lili and was one of the first documented people to undergo such surgery. This fascinating story has been immortalised in the 2015 award-winning film ‘The Danish Girl’, where Einar Wegener was memorably portrayed by Eddie Redmayne.

Personal life aside, before becoming Lili (and her tragic death that closely followed) Einar was a well-known artist and Einar Wegener paintings hung in some of Europe’s top galleries. His wife, Gerda Wegener, was also an artist and together they travelled through Europe, painting and entertaining.

Einar Wegener loved to paint landscapes and was particularly inspired by childhood holidays, while Gerda had a fantastic eye for fashion art and often painted stylish portraits of Lili. Why not take a closer look at some Einar Wegener art?

Beautiful boudoirs and landscapes

Einar Wegener could really capture the atmosphere of a scene, whether it’s a windswept coast or an intimate interior. One of his most loved paintings has to be ‘Boudoir’, which has a wealth of small details to enjoy from the casually strewn hat and boots to the artworks hanging in their gilded frames. It has a deliciously naughty feel, as if we have been allowed a glimpse of a secret and private room. The rich reds, golds and purples of the painting create a decadent atmosphere that would look great in a cosy living room, a traditional study, or indeed your own boudoir!

Which material will best suit your Einar Wegener print?

You can choose from a range of materials for your Einar Wegener print, from the traditional to the contemporary. If you love an authentic museum finish, then stretched cotton canvas is the choice for you. This can be hung directly onto your wall or framed in an elegant floating frame.

If your picture is painted in intense colours, then slender Alu-Dibond will give you a bold, eye-catching effect, while pale colours are complemented best when printed onto lightweight Forex foam board. If you’re looking for something splash-proof, perhaps for a bathroom or kitchen, then glossy acrylic glass gives a cool modern finish.

Or why not try something a bit different and print onto wood to create some gorgeous texture? And don’t forget about our high-quality photo paper if you’re looking for the most affordable option.
