John Ruskin

John Ruskin

English art critic turned painter

John Ruskin was best known as the leading art critic of the Victorian era, writing the highly influential art book ‘Modern Painters’ – amongst others! What is less well-known is the fact that John Ruskin was a talented artist in his own right. His paintings and sketches may have been overshadowed by his writing in the past, but they deserve to be equally celebrated today.

His style has a gorgeous delicate nature to it, using soft colours, fine pencil sketches and beautiful watercolours. His idol of the art world was William Turner, and you can see similarities between their work. Once you take a look at our John Ruskin prints, you’ll want one of your very own!

From grand palaces to majestic mountains

John Ruskin drew inspiration from both nature and society. He was a religious man and loved the grand architecture of churches, captured in his watercolour and pencil sketch of ‘The Tower of Trinity Church, Richmond’. He was also inspired by the opulent palaces of Europe, showcasing his staggering attention to detail in his sketches of the ‘Exterior of Ducal Palace, Venice’ and the glorious curves of the arches in ‘The Ducal Palace’.

John Ruskin also created some stunning landscape paintings and seemed to be particularly drawn to the mountains. Scenes such as the dramatic jagged peaks of ‘Mountain Landscape’ and the Alpine summits in ‘Mont Dauphiny, near Chartreuse’ bring a real atmosphere of wild nature to a room.

‘Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort.’
(John Ruskin)

Choosing the right material for your print

Make sure your new favourite artwork looks its best by taking some time to choose the best material for it. Complement a John Ruskin watercolour by choosing to have it printed onto stretched cotton canvas for a beautiful gallery finish. You could even frame it in a floating frame to complete the look.

The delicate colours of many John Ruskin prints and sketches would look fantastic printed onto lightweight Forex foam board, which enhances the fine details of the piece. If you want to create a sense of depth to your print, go for glossy acrylic glass – this also gives you a lovely slender piece of art. And for the most cost-effective option, you can’t beat our high-quality photo paper that can either be easily framed or hung straight on your wall!
