El Greco or ‘the Greek’ is actually the nickname of Domínikos Theotokópoulos, a great 16th-century painter from (you guessed it) Greece. As a young artist, he studied in Venice and Rome and was heavily influenced by the grand masters, such as Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, as well as the Byzantine art of his homeland, Crete. Following his training, he settled in Toledo in Spain where he would go on to create most of his work.
El Greco artwork is said by many to be indefinable, not belonging to any particular artistic movement. You’ll find a distinctive and imaginative style to El Greco paintings, as he refused to be bound by classical rules of proportion and light. Bold colours are contrasted with plenty of shade and his portraits are known for their distorted, wide-eyed faces. Take a look at our collection of El Greco masterpieces to find your favourites.
A dramatic style
El Greco really does have an individual style. From his landscapes to his portraits, his paintings have an other-worldly quality. We love his use of bright tones in pieces like ‘The Annunciation’ or ‘The Holy Family with Saint Anna’, where classical scenes are given a serious injection of modern colour!
El Greco is particularly famous for his portraits, so why not give your home a sense of Spanish grandeur by hanging a dramatic painting in the stairwell, such as ‘Portrait of Juan Alfonso de Pimentel y Herrera’ with its striking black-and-white colour palette.
Choosing the right material for your print
El Greco’s unique style works well with the variety of materials. His paintings have a timeless quality so are equally suited to the contemporary and the traditional. For an authentic gallery finish, you can’t go wrong with stretched cotton canvas to complement his brushwork. Take the look a step further and hang in a floating frame for a really professional effect.
The bright bold colours in many El Greco pieces have a modern feel that works really well printed onto slender Alu-Dibond to create a colour-intensive, high contrast finish. They would also look fantastic printed onto glossy acrylic glass – which has the added benefit of being weatherproof, allowing you to hang your print wherever you like! And if you’re in search of the most affordable option, it has to be our high-quality photo paper.
